Jeera Rice

Jeera Rice is proof that simple dishes can still be incredibly delicious. Made with just a few ingredients: basmati rice, cumin seeds, ghee or butter, and a touch of seasoning, this aromatic side dish transforms any meal into something special.

The nutty fragrance of toasted cumin pairs beautifully with curries, dals, and gravies, making it a staple across South Asian homes. Think of it as an elevated version of plain rice, subtle yet full of depth and flavor.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp ghee (or butter)
3 cups washed basmati rice
1 bay leaf
2 star anise
5 cloves
5 black peppercorns
3 green cardamon pods
2 tbsp cumin seeds
1/2 cinnamon stick (about an inch)
3 cups of water
1 tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Add the ghee to a hot Instant Pot on Sauté mode.

  2. Add the whole spices (bay leaf, star anise, cloves, cardamom pods, cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, peppercorns) and cook for about 1-2 minutes.

  3. Add washed and drained basmati rice and stir, cooking for about 3 minutes.

  4. Add water and salt and mix.

  5. Set to manual on high pressure for 4 minutes, with a 5 minute natural release before releasing the rest of the pressure.

  6. Fork the rice to fluff it up and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

  7. Serve and enjoy!
