There's nothing like the smell of warm cornbread baking on a cozy fall day!

This homemade recipe skips the oil and uses applesauce instead, making it incredibly soft and moist without being overly sweet. We also cut back on the sugar and added herbs with a hint of cayenne for a savory, spiced-up twist that pairs beautifully with soups, curries, or chili.

It's wholesome, simple, and full of that comforting fall flavor we crave! Plus, this recipe makes a double batch!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until you have a smooth batter.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased 8 × 8-inch baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes. Then, cover the pan with a layer of aluminum foil and continue baking for another 5–7 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cornbread to cool for 5 minutes before cutting it into squares. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Serving note: For an 8 x 8-inch pan, we recommend 9 servings, cut into a 3 x 3 grid of generous squares. For smaller portions, you can cut the cornbread into 16 squares instead.
